5 dead in lightning strike in Odisha, heavy rain continues | News from India

At least five people were killed in lightning strikes at different locations in Bargarh and Bolangir districts of Odisha state on Wednesday, police said.

An official press release said that Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi had promised a donation of Rs 400,000 to the next of kin of the deceased.

While three people died in a lightning strike in Duanadihi village in Bargarh, two others lost their lives in Chaulbanji village in Bolangir.

Meanwhile, heavy rains hit several parts of Odisha state on Wednesday, leading to flooding in low-lying areas, officials said.

Nayagarh received 110 mm of rainfall during the day, Paralakhemundi 69.8 mm, Nabarangpur 23 mm and Bhubaneswar 21.3 mm, it said.

Manorama Mohanty, director of the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, said the state would continue to experience rain for four more days.

Heavy to very heavy rains are likely to occur in some places in Gajapati, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Balangir, Nuapada, Malkangiri and Koraput districts on Thursday, she said.

“Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts will experience thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface wind with a speed of 30 to 40 kmph on June 26,” the weather department said in a bulletin.
