The Utah Hockey Club may have a long way to go before it can build its permanent offices and training facilities in Sandy.

But first, the club will move to the Olympic Oval in Kearns and make some adjustments to the facility.

Team owner Ryan Smith has already begun converting one of the Olympic-sized ice surfaces into an NHL-sized rink for the team to practice on. He also plans to build NHL locker rooms and office space for the team’s decision-makers, as well as new treatment areas.

The Olympic Oval was built for the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. It currently has two ice surfaces and a speed skating track. US Speedskating still operates at the Kearns facility.

The project is expected to cost several million dollars, the Smith Entertainment Group said in a press release.

“We look forward to partnering with the Utah Hockey Club in creating a comprehensive training center for players and staff,” Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation President Colin Hilton said in a prepared statement.
