Peacock uses AI-generated Al Michaels voice for the Olympics

Peacock will use artificial intelligence to present daily summaries of the Olympic Games in the voice of famous sports commentator Al Michaels, parent company NBC announced Wednesday.

Subscribers to NBC’s Peacock streaming service can watch recaps of the Paris Olympics, narrated by an AI-generated voice based on the legendary sportscaster.

As part of “Your Daily Olympics Recap on Peacock,” users will be greeted by name and given highlights of the sports they’re interested in learning more about — all in Michaels’ voice.

The 10-minute recaps can also be personalized with viral moments from the events and backstories about the athletes. The recaps can be customized in about 7 million configurations, the network said.

Before the summaries are published, NBC Sports editors review them for accuracy, including the pronunciation of people’s names and events.

Michaels approved the use of his voice, which is based on his many years as a sports commentator for the network. He has covered the Olympics for NBC since 2010.
