Iowa man electrocuted while trying to steal copper wire, police said

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) – Sioux City Police believe a man was electrocuted while attempting to steal copper wire.

According to a police news release, police responded to a burglary in the 2100 block of Court Street around 4:20 a.m. Wednesday morning.


When officers arrived at the scene, they found a male suspect who had been electrocuted. Police believe he was electrocuted while attempting to steal copper wiring.

The man, identified as Jarrod Schweitzberger, 37, was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Police said a second person, 39-year-old Denair Byars, was also at the scene. He was arrested and charged with third-degree burglary.

Police said they are working with the property owner to gather more information about this incident. Anyone with information is asked to submit a tip to Crime Stoppers at 712-258-8477.

Police also want to use this as an opportunity to remind people that stealing copper wiring and other metals can be dangerous. Police are urging citizens to report anything suspicious as it could save lives.
