Is the science fiction thriller worth watching on Apple TV+?

Dark matter on Apple TV+ just released its finale (spoiler alert, here’s our review of it), and if you haven’t watched it yet, you might be wondering if the sci-fi thriller is worth watching. I’d say yes. Although there are some things I didn’t like about the series. But as a drama on the whole, I think it’s one of the better made sci-fi productions and the story is fascinating.

What I find most interesting is that the whole series revolves around the main antagonist, who is an alternate version of the main character Jason Dessen. While walking home one night, Jason is attacked and kidnapped by a masked figure. He quickly learns that this is another version of himself from another reality (aka Jason2). The series explores the themes and mechanics of the multiverse and how all these different worlds exist simultaneously. And the possibilities are endless.

Jason2 uses the box to send Jason to his reality and take his place with his wife Daniela and son Charlie. When Jason wakes up in this other world, he quickly puts the pieces together and that’s one of the things I really like about the show. It doesn’t take long for the main character or us as viewers to figure out what’s really going on. In other shows, sometimes these elements can be dragged out and the mystery goes on too long. Instead, the reveal happens quickly and it works. Then we get to the heart of the story.

Basically, from here it’s a hero’s journey where Jason tries to get back to his reality and his family. He and a character named Amanda, who is actually Jason2’s girlfriend, end up in the box and try to find a way back to his world. Without giving too much away, I’ll say where Dark matter What confused me a little is the fact that too much time is spent in the box, and the ending felt rushed and not as dramatic as I had hoped. There were some elements introduced as a plot device to increase the tension, but that was honestly a flop. So the finale and ending were not that great for me.

Still, I think the sci-fi drama is well done overall and is a show that stands out not only in this genre but also in current streaming offerings in general. The sci-fi element isn’t too hard to understand as the characters explain things well. But it doesn’t take too long either as otherwise there will be too much explanation. Joel Edgerton is just a great actor as Jason and delivers some strong performances that add so much depth and emotion to his character. He also plays Jason2, another version of the character who wasn’t as good and is the antagonist. Brilliant! I also have to commend Charlie actor Oakes Fegley. He brought such a sweet charm to his character and I hope the actor’s career continues to flourish.

So if you are wondering if you should check out Dark matter or not, I think it’s worth your time. It’s a fascinating look at what choices a person would make with all of life’s what-ifs that might lead them down a different path. And that could make someone a completely different person because of certain choices. Even with its flaws, if you’re considering watching it Dark matterthen do it. If I had to give it a grade, I would give the series a B. For a complete list of episode reviews, see Click here.
