Hey Hondo! Answering your Michigan State University basketball questions: “Best roster of all time?”

Hey Hondo! Answering your Michigan State University basketball questions: “Best roster of all time?”

The Spartan Nation is fortunate to have one of the most prestigious college basketball programs led by a legendary Hall of Fame coach in Tom Izzo.

The history is fantastic, including multiple national titles, 26 consecutive NCAA appearances, and a lineage of players that are truly a who’s who of the sport. On top of that, no one has reached more Final Fours during his time as head coach of the Spartans than Tom Izzo.

So today I want to answer some of your questions about the basketball program.

Hey Hondo, does winning an NBA title put Xavier Tillman on the list of greatest Spartans of all time? Kyle R.

I think he’s a great Spartan and friend. That said, I’ve been of the opinion for years that what you do at MSU qualifies for this list and not beyond. He’s one of the all-time greats, but his NBA title doesn’t change where.

When Tom Izzo recruited Delvon Roe, you told a story of a coach who said, “That son of a bitch is taught to recruit against him because that MF means business. I’ll get them, and then their play will determine if they get me. Do you think that’s still true? Chase A.

It’s still 100% true, but I remember the quote a little differently, but the competition is almost the same. Tom Izzo is different from other coaches in many ways, not the least of which is his commitment to them as people.

Hondo, you mentioned last week a story you want to tell in your book when your career is over. Can you tell the story about the four UNC fans’ tickets from the tournament? I think I know it. Carl V.

Can I? Yes, I could. Will I? No, but I will definitely be in the book. It’s a story that makes you laugh, but it also has a sad side. There’s someone alive and I don’t feel the need to hurt him.

Hondo, what do you think about the Top ten list of one of your authors published for MSU basketball players? Scott N.

I think he made his point, but I have a hard time accepting a Michigan State University basketball roster that doesn’t include Scott Skiles.
