Vanessa Diaz, Editor-in-Chief of Book Riot, is a writer and former bookseller from San Diego, California, whose Spanish is even faster than her English. When she’s not reading or writing, she enjoys dreaming up travel itineraries and drinking way too much tea. She’s a regular co-host of the All the Books podcast and especially loves crime fiction, gothic literature, mythology/folklore, and anything witchcraft-related. Vanessa can be found on Instagram at @BuenosDiazSD or photographing pretty trees in Portland, Oregon, where she currently lives.

As senior editor, I don’t write many newsletters for Book Riot these days, aside from The Deep Dive. But earlier this month I got to fill in for Erica and write for In the Club, our book club newsletter and guide that helps you and your book club friends stay well-connected, well-read, and well-fed.

I wrote this newsletter myself from 2018 to 2022, taking over from Book Riot alumnus Jenn Northington and introducing myself as “this club’s new bouncer.” Got it? Because clubs have bouncers.” In my second newsletter broadcast, I regaled people with a book club remix of the eponymous 50 Cent song, with such brilliant lyrics as “look buddy, I got the blurbs if you’re into advertising books / I love reading ARCs from the big and the indie pubs…” I know. I’m so cool.

Aside from reminding me why I should stay away from the rap business, spending time in my old newsletter stomping grounds has made me nostalgic for book clubs. I haven’t had much time for that lately, and I really miss getting together for a good, old-fashioned book talk. I’m going to make an effort to get back to some sort of book club at least a few times this year, even if it’s just the two-person, bi-coastal book club I have with a friend where the structure is “pick a book, read it whenever you want, maybe text about it?” Whether you’re ready to dive back into book club, or you’ve never been, here are some book club-themed gifts for you and your clubmates.
