It’s too hot for that right now, but the first trailer for The Rock’s Christmas action film about rescuing Santa Claus is here

We’re in the middle of a heatwave here in the UK, but that hasn’t stopped MGM from releasing the first trailer for Christmas action film Red One.

Do you remember when they made normal, nice, happy Christmas movies? Movies where families come together in difficult times and overcome all the odds that are against them? I don’t know at the moment, because it seems like every Christmas movie these days has to be some kind of variation of the genre. Where is the seriousness? There is certainly none of that in the first trailer for Red One, which Amazon MGM Studios released yesterday. If you haven’t heard about the upcoming Christmas movie yet, it stars Chris Evans as the world’s most notorious bounty hunter, who is hired by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Santa’s right-hand man, to save good old Santa.

You can watch the film’s first trailer above, and it looks… good. I think I’m being a little generous, because the dialogue is pretty damn over the top (“This guy can’t be trusted, he’s on the list. Yes, that list”) and the performances seem incredibly contrived. But JK Simmons plays a buff Santa, so, I don’t know, maybe there’s something funny there. Rounding out the cast are Lucy Liu (Kill Bill), Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Bonnie Hunt (Jumanji), Kristofer Hivju (Game of Thrones), Nick Kroll (Sausage Party), and Wesley Kimmel (The Mandolorian). The film is directed by Jake Kasdan, who Johnson previously worked with on Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and The Next Level.

It’s worth noting that a report surfaced earlier this year about Johnson’s behavior on the set of Red One, with multiple anonymous sources claiming he would relieve himself in water bottles on set and leave the disposal to his crew or personal assistant. There were also claims he would show up to eight hours late on set, and the crew was reportedly forced to shoot around him, so keep that in mind if you plan on watching the film when it hits theaters in November this year.
