OpenAI’s voice mode feature for ChatGPT delayed, alpha testing begins in July

OpenAI announced on Tuesday that it is delaying the launch of its enhanced voice mode for ChatGPT with emotional expressions and real-time responses. The artificial intelligence (AI) company showcased the feature during the Spring Updates event last month along with its latest GPT-4o model. OpenAI now plans to begin alpha testing of the voice mode next month. The company did not provide details on other features demoed at the event, such as real-time video processing and screen sharing capabilities for its chatbot.

OpenAI delays the introduction of GPT-4o features

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI has released an update on the enhanced Voice Mode feature. As demonstrated last month, the feature is powered by GPT-4o and allows ChatGPT to verbally respond to prompts and requests in real time. It was also demonstrated that the chatbot can modulate its voice, express emotions, and even sing. This feature was one of the key announcements at the OpenAI event.

However, the company has now confirmed that the feature will not be available until July. There are several reasons for the delay. OpenAI says it is working on the feature’s ability to detect and reject certain content, and it is scaling the infrastructure so that millions of users can access real-time voice responses without delays.

The current plan is to make the feature available to a small group of ChatGPT Plus users as part of the alpha testing program. Based on the feedback and learnings, the AI company then plans to make the feature available to all Plus users in the fall, but has not announced a specific timeline for the rollout.

In addition, the company also acknowledged delays in the delivery of other features unveiled at the event. For example, there is no release schedule for ChatGPT’s ability to see and interact with the environment in real time via the user’s video feed, as well as its screen sharing features. OpenAI said it will keep users updated on this.

Separately, the AI company released its ChatGPT app for macOS to all users on Tuesday. The app comes with new features like keyboard shortcuts for quick launch, loading screenshots directly into the app, and support for the default voice mode.
