Perrie Edwards hints that ‘really sad song’ on new album is about Jesy Nelson

Perrie Edwards hinted that she wrote a song about her former bandmate Jesy Nelson for her debut solo album.

The 30-year-old singer explained that the song reflects “a friendship that I no longer have” and said that every time she hears it, it moves her to tears.

Edwards and Nelson, 33, rose to fame in 2011 alongside Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall on the X Factor series Little Mix.

After Nelson left the band in 2020 for mental health reasons, she has not been in touch with her former bandmates.

The “Forget About Us” hitmaker spoke about her solo career on the Zach Sang Show and said the song is about someone who was once an important part of her life but with whom she no longer sees eye to eye.

Although she did not explicitly mention Nelson by name, she described him as someone who was “a big part of my life,” adding, “There’s a friendship that I don’t have anymore. I wrote a song about that. That song – I can’t even listen to it without crying.”

She continued: “It’s about her and the fact that we didn’t see eye to eye. It’s a really sad song. We don’t talk to each other anymore.”

“They were a big part of my life and so it’s sad how it all ended.”

When host Sang asked her if she would ever be ready to reconcile with her ex-boyfriend, Edwards admitted, “I’m open to it. I don’t know if they would be after hearing the song.”

Nelson previously explained that her exit from Little Mix was due to mental health issues, citing the relentless pressure and expectations that come with being part of a girl group. She told The Sun: “My mental health issues were a constant theme when I was in Little Mix. I was struggling with my physical issues, I was constantly being ridiculed and I was really, really struggling.”

“I was there for nearly 10 years. I don’t think I was ever prepared for what was to come. I didn’t have social media or anything. I was just a barmaid working in Dagenham.

“I needed support and help to overcome that and I didn’t have time for that when I was in the band. I don’t regret anything because I had to do what was right for me and I will always cherish the memories I had with Little Mix.”
