Lil Nas X’s new song is a tribute to an 80s classic

Lil Nas X has announced that his next new song will be released on June 28th. And this time he’s getting a little help from Eddie Murphy’s legendary detective Axel Foley.

The song “Here We Go” will be featured on the long-awaited new Beverly Hills Cop: Axel FLil Nas X says it is his first song written specifically for a film.

Fans of the original Beverly Hills Cop Movies will recognize the song. It contains a sample from the 80s classic “Axel F” by Harold Faltermeyer (you probably know the electronic riff too if you don’t know the name).

Lil Nas X shared a snippet of the song on social media yesterday.

Netflix, which will stream the film, also announced news about the release.

The first Beverly Hills Cop was a huge hit in 1984 and made Eddie Murphy an A-list Hollywood star. Sequels followed in 1987 and 1994. This third sequel will be released on Netflix on July 3.

In the film, Murphy’s daughter Bria (one of his ten children) appears as a traffic cop.

Lil Nas X rose to fame in 2019 with his global hit “Old Town Road.” At the end of Pride Month that same year, he came out as gay. This was followed by the number one hits “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” and “Industry Baby.”

After not releasing any new music for several years, Lil Nas X’s track “J Christ” peaked at a disappointing No. 69 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 2024. He has since released several tracks on Soundcloud, including a collaboration with Camila Cabello (“He Knows”) last month.
