Big Creek State Park expands accessibility with Action Trackchair

To improve accessibility, an Action Trackchair was installed in Big Creek State Park.

According to a press release from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the wheelchair is designed for rough terrain, allowing wheelchair users to explore a much larger portion of the park grounds. It can travel on sand, rock, grass, and fishing piers. The only areas that remain inaccessible are the docks and boats, and the lake.

The Action Trackchair is comfortable and easy to ride. The battery life is 5-7 hours depending on the terrain.

In the press release, DNR Public Services Director Chad Kelchen said the chair is the first of its kind for the agency.

“This provides a unique opportunity to visit places that were not previously accessible, especially the beautiful beach here in the park,” he said.

Iowa DNR was one of 18 organizations to receive a chair through a grant from the Ford Bronco Wild Fund. Kelchen said this is considered a trial, with the possibility of future expansion depending on usage and public feedback.

The Action Trackchair is available free of charge at the concessionaire building near the beach at Big Creek State Park. Advance reservations are not possible.
