OpenAI confirms: Introduction of ChatGPT’s new voice mode delayed

In May last year, OpenAI unveiled the GPT-4o model and demonstrated an impressive voice mode that allows users to have a human-like conversation with ChatGPT. OpenAI had hoped to start rolling out the new voice mode to a select group of ChatGPT Plus users by the end of June. Now, however, OpenAI says it is “One month left until we reach our starting threshold“.

The hot AI startup says it improves the GPT-4o model for voice conversations and the “Ability to recognize and reject certain content“. In addition, OpenAI is working on the infrastructure to scale the voice mode feature to millions of users and reduce latency and enable real-time responses.

OpenAI also states that the deployment will begin gradually a month later, starting with an alpha preview with a small group of users. After that, by the end of this year, all ChatGPT Plus users will have access to the new voice mode on ChatGPT. OpenAI refuses to give an exact timeline, saying the rollout depends on how well the product is received by users.

Next, OpenAI is also preparing to launch features like video and screen sharing, which OpenAI demonstrated during the event. In case you don’t know, Scarlett Johansson revealed that Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has been in touch with the actress and pushed to provide her voice for the new voice mode on ChatGPT.

After Johansson declined, OpenAI developed a “Sky” voice that sounded eerily similar to Johansson’s character in the movie “Her.” Following allegations from the actress, OpenAI has removed the “Sky” voice from ChatGPT. Let’s see what new voices are available when the enhanced voice mode is finally available.
