Prime Video will release one of the biggest action movies of the year

Prime Video has secured the rights to stream “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” by Guy Ritchie.

The film will be available to watch from Thursday, July 25th, so it’s ready for the weekend.

This marks a slight change in the pace of notable films being added to Prime Video, with a number of award-winning and award-nominated films being included throughout 2024.

Saltburn, American Fiction, The Zone of Interest and Anatomy of a Fall all raised eyebrows at Shortlist HQ when they landed on Prime Video. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is much more of a straight-up action film. And one that deserves more attention.

In “The Ministry of Unmanned War”, Henry Cavill plays the role of Gus March-Phillips. He is part of a team of British soldiers tasked with disabling the German submarine fleet during World War II.

The film is also at least loosely based on a true story, but is a pure action film with a lot of comedy and without much in-depth consideration of real events.

Alan Ritchson, Alex Pettyfer, Babs Olusamokun, Eiza González and Henry Golding also star, while Roy Kinnear plays Winston Churchill.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare was released in theaters in April 2024 – although the film was not a huge success, it is the kind of film that does well on a streaming service.

The film also received a number of fairly positive reviews, which is not a bad result considering the genre and style of the film.

“This is a Guy Ritchie action comedy through and through, which means it’s going to be a stylish, cartoonishly brutal, slick and relatively mindless popcorn movie. We’ll take it,” says the Chicago Sun-Times review, which gets 3/4.

“With a Ritchie film, you usually know what to expect, and that’s never a problem with this naughty delight. Every time the tension starts to wane, Alan Ritchson shows up and aggressively murders a Nazi – then everything’s fine,” says IGN in its 7/10 review.

The Guardian gave the film a rating of 3/5, saying that Richie’s “ability to construct gripping action sequences remains hard to fault, and the brutality of it all conveys a childlike pleasure, especially in the hands of Ritchson’s bloodthirsty madman.”

All in all, a film that you might not necessarily go to the theater for, but one that you probably won’t want to miss if it comes out on a streaming service.

Prime Video also currently offers Ritchie’s previous film, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, and the more serious The Covenant by Guy Ritchie.
