Donora VFC President Taylor dies at 31

Rhys Taylor, president of the Donora Volunteer Fire Department, died on Monday.

Longtime Donora volunteer firefighter Rhys Taylor died Monday at the age of 31.

Taylor, who served as president of the Donora Volunteer Fire Department for the past five years, died of health problems, according to County Mayor Don Pavelko.

“He was a really good kid,” Pavelko said, noting that Taylor dated his daughter in elementary school. “She’s devastated. The whole fire department is devastated,” he said. “He was definitely an asset to Donora. He’s been through a lot over the last few years. He never, ever complained. There are very few young people like him.”

Taylor has been a member of the fire department since he was 14 and began a career as an emergency medical technician in 2018.

Taylor was elected police officer for Donora in the last election, but never had the opportunity to serve in that capacity due to health problems.

A black wreath was laid in front of the fire station along with his helmet and equipment.

“He was a wonderful boy,” said Cindy Brice, council president. “He was well-liked, well-respected and a volunteer in our community. It is truly a loss for Donora.”

Funeral arrangements are being handled by the William R. Taylor Funeral Home in Monessen.
