A long-missing deleted song from the 2007 film Cursed has finally seen the light of day thanks to the reconstruction of a fan.
What happens:
- Cursed was originally supposed to include an introductory song sung by Idina Menzel as Nancy and James Marsden as Prince Edward.
- As with all other songs in Cursedthe music is by Alan Menken with lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.
- By deleting this song, Menzel, the Broadway star and future voice of Elsa, would no longer have any singing parts in the film.
- Disney Ashman Demos has released a rough reconstruction of the scene on YouTube, which includes both the intro sung by Idina Menzel and James Marsden and a demo by composer Alan Menken from 2006.
- Kevin Lima, the director of Cursedannounced on his personal Instagram account that the song had leaked.
- In an interview, Menzel said: “Honestly, no songs were written for Nancy. Patrick’s character and my character are the New Yorkers, and we don’t sing. It was never written that way, and I was really flattered when I was hired as an actress.”
- Songwriter Alan Menken further explained, “Stephen really wanted the film to end with a song sequence and something new, not just a little bit of a repeat. And we wrote a theme song called ‘Enchanted’, where Edward and Nancy first meet and then a montage develops. From a practical point of view, it was just extremely difficult to deliver that kind of song so late in the film.”
- There were reportedly plans to release the song on the DVD release of the film, but it was never officially released.
- Menzel would finally be able to sing in the sequel to the film in 2022, Disenchanted.
