HBO orders Green Lantern series “Lanterns”

Another DC Comics title comes to life in the form of a scripted drama.

HBO, in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, has ordered a direct-to-series order for the new drama. Lanterns. Based on the DC comic Green LanternAccording to the logline, the series follows “new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops who find themselves drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery while investigating a murder in the heartland of America.”

The order for Lanterns comes four years after the streaming service Max (then known as HBO Max) announced plans for a Green Lantern series. However, this planned incarnation was never realized.

Chris Mundy (True Detective: Nightland, Ozarks) will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Damon Lindelof (Guardian, Lost) and Tom King (Mr. Miracle, Supergirl) will co-write the new series with Mundy. Lindelof and King will also serve as executive producers.

“We are thrilled to bring this groundbreaking DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm,” said DC Studios co-chairmen and co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran in a joint statement. “John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a fundamental part of the unified DCU that we will see next summer with Superman.”

Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, added in a statement: “We are thrilled to be re-teaming with Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof, who have worked with Tom on this fresh take on DC’s Green Lantern. As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live-action series will usher in an exciting new era.”

Eight episodes of Lanterns have been ordered. At the time of going to press, no casting had been announced.
