Among those cheering on the team’s stadium plans is Jacksonville Jaguars legend Fred Taylor.

“I think it’s overdue. It’s time,” Taylor said. “And I believe the city leaders and Mr. (Shad) Khan and the Jags will get it right.”

Speaking Tuesday at Dream Finders Homes Flex Field, the longtime Jags running back expressed optimism about the NFL team’s stadium plans, which the City Council approved Tuesday night by a vote of 14 to 1.

Taylor played for the Jaguars from 1998 to 2008, and had 11,271 rushing yards during his career in Jacksonville. He was inducted into the Pride of the Jaguars in 2012. He is now a co-owner of the Sporting Club Jacksonville soccer franchise and spoke at the announcement of a youth training program ahead of the Stateside Cup tournament to be held at the stadium next month. Taylor’s comments came earlier in the day, before the city council meeting.

Mark Woods: After billion-dollar stadium deal, a $94 million question remains

The City Council approved $775 million for renovations that will transform EverBank Stadium into the Jags’ planned “stadium of the future,” the largest single-purpose investment in Jacksonville to date, and will allow the Jaguars to play in the 2027 season.

“In a few years you will have a modern stadium that resembles the other beautiful stadiums,” Taylor said. “I’m not just talking about the look, but also the technology, because the technology has to be there. That’s how the world is evolving.”

Taylor said he hopes the improvements to the stadium will also improve Jacksonville as a whole.

“The stadium is a gathering place for the whole community,” Taylor said. “The more they improve it and modernize it, the more people will be excited because you’re giving them a piece of them.”
