Ukraine and Russia exchange 90 prisoners of war

Kyiv:

Ukraine and Russia have each exchanged 90 prisoners of war, the largest exchange between the two warring sides in nearly five months, officials said on Tuesday.

Moscow and Kyiv have carried out more than 50 prisoner exchanges since Russia invaded Ukraine more than two years ago, despite ongoing hostilities and mutual accusations of derailing the talks.

The United Arab Emirates mediated the agreement announced on Tuesday.

“Today, 90 more of our people returned home from Russian captivity,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on social media.

“We remember all our people in Russian captivity. We continue to work for the release of each and every one of them,” he said.

Russia announced that 90 of its soldiers “who were in danger of death in captivity have returned from the territory controlled by the Kiev regime.”

The released soldiers will be flown to Moscow by air “to be treated and rehabilitated there,” the Defense Ministry said, confirming that it had released 90 Ukrainian soldiers in return.

The last prisoner exchange between the two warring sides took place at the end of May. At that time, both sides exchanged 75 prisoners each, also mediated by the UAE.

In February, both sides said they had exchanged 100 prisoners each, their first exchange since Moscow accused Kyiv of shooting down a plane carrying captured Ukrainian soldiers.
