Chris Paddack on the injured list, Twins take over starting spot on Thursday against Diamondbacks

PHOENIX, Ariz. (AP) — The Minnesota Twins placed starting pitcher Chris Paddack on the 15-day injured list Tuesday because of arm fatigue before beginning a three-game series in Arizona.

Paddack, who missed most of the 2022 and 2023 seasons while recovering from Tommy John elbow surgery, is 5-3 with a 5.29 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 78 1/3 innings in 15 starts this year.

He was scheduled to start in the series finale against the Diamondbacks on Thursday.

The right-hander has allowed 19 runs on 27 hits and eight walks in 23 innings over his last five appearances. He has pitched just seven innings in his last two appearances, allowing eight runs. Paddack should be next on the mound on Thursday.

The Twins have brought back right-hander Ronny Henriquez from Triple-A St. Paul to take Paddack’s place on the roster for the time being.

This is Henriquez’s second appearance with the Twins this season. He has a 3.52 ERA in 38 1/3 innings with St. Paul in 22 appearances, including one start.

Paddack was signed by the Twins in a trade with San Diego shortly before the start of the 2022 regular season and started five games before being diagnosed with a torn ligament in his elbow.

He underwent the surgery in May of that year – the second of his career after the procedure he had as a minor leaguer in 2016 – and returned to the mound in Minnesota after a 16-month absence in time to be inserted into the bullpen for the playoffs last fall.
