Superman’s deadliest villain could cost Lex Luthor’s heir her life

The following contains major spoilers for Action Comics #1066, on sale now at DC Comics.

The Superman family must face an entire army of Brainiacs, but Lena Luthor is the one who could lose her life because of them.

From Brainiac’s ship, currently floating in space, Superman and his allies have watched as Brainiac’s new creation, the Brainiac Queen, struck down an entire city full of Czarnians to add their power to her own. As seen in the pages of Action Comics #1066, the Czarnians aren’t the only ones Brainiac wants to use as fuel for his endeavors. Not only does he have his sights set on the Kryptonian heroes in his ranks, but he also has deadly plans for Lena Luthor, and the clock he’s set for her is ticking much faster than for anyone else.

The original, pre-crisis version of Vril Dox, better known as Brainiac, made his comic book debut in 1958 in the pages of Action Comics #242 in Otto Binder and Al Plastino’s inaugural story, “The Superduel in Space.” In the decades since, numerous versions of Brainiac and his successors have graced the pages of DC Comics. In recent months, the current Brainiac has unleashed a series of increasingly dangerous terrors, starting with an entire army of Czarnians.

Led by the ruthless General Chacal, the Zarnian army, the “Bad Blood,” was captured by Brainiac when the alien city they conquered was miniaturized and added to the classic villain’s collection of bottled locations. When “Bad Blood” was released to carry out his plan, they immediately caught the attention of the Man of Steel and his unlikely ally Lobo. Eventually, Lobo betrayed Superman to rejoin his people, only to realize how wrong he was when he saw them slaughtered and consumed by the Brainiac Queen.

DC’s strangest Superman just lost his life

DC’s most underrated supervillain takes the life of one of the strangest Supermen to ever appear in Suicide Squad.

The current Lena Luthor II (daughter of Lex Luthor) and Contessa Erica Alexandra del Portenza were introduced in 2023 Superman #7 by writer Joshua Williamson and artists Gleb Melnikov, Dan Jurgens, Norm Rapmund, and Edwin Galmon. Shortly after Lena’s birth, Lex traded her to Brainiac in exchange for technology from the distant future. In the aftermath, Brainiac raised Lena and made her his avatar in the present-day DC Universe. After being rescued by Superman, Lena was returned to her father, who erased all traces of Brainiac’s psyche and influence before attempting to raise her as best as he could.
