At June 3, 2024Toyota filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission an English translation of an announcement Toyota had filed with the Tokyo Stock Exchange earlier that day. Toyota’s announcement stated that after “investigating its model certification applications in accordance with the instructions of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT),” Toyota found that “seven models… were tested using methods that deviated from government standards(.)” On the same day, the New York Times published an article titled “Toyota and other Japanese automakers say they mishandled safety tests.” The article reported that “Toyota (. . .) and other leading Japanese automakers (have admitted) that internal investigations have found they mishandled vehicle tests on dozens of models over the past decade.” It also said “Toyota failed to conduct pedestrian and passenger safety tests on three models, including the popular Yaris Cross Sports Utility Vehicle.”

Due to this news, the price of Toyota’s American Depositary Shares (ADS) fell $5.34 per ADS or 2.45%, ending at $212.17 via ADS on June 3, 2024.
