San Angelo man stabbed to death, man charged with manslaughter

A 23-year-old man from San Angelo is dead after an alleged stabbing on Sunday.

The Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of Layne Lubke, who was killed in the 1200 block of Vines Road, a news release said.

Shae Shepherd, 24, of San Angelo was charged with manslaughter and was being held Tuesday at the Tom Green County Detention Center on $45,000 bail.

Officers arrived in the area on Vines Road around 11:53 p.m. on Sunday after a stabbing victim was reported.

When they arrived, they found Lübke in the backyard with a stab wound in the upper left chest area and another in the left abdominal area.

“A second person at the scene, 24-year-old Shae Shepherd of San Angelo, attempted to apply direct pressure to the wounds,” the press release states. “The victim was subsequently transported by ambulance to Shannon Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.”

The preliminary investigation indicates that Lubke and Shepherd spent Sunday afternoon together drinking at bars in San Angelo.

“The two were called back to Shepherd’s residence by his girlfriend. She claimed she heard gunshots in the area and then the sound of someone breaking into her residence,” the press release states.

When he reached the house, Shepherd armed himself with a pocket knife and walked to the back of the house, where he encountered Lubke coming from the other direction.

“In the confusion of the moment and obviously under the influence of alcohol, the defendant Shepherd stabbed and killed Lubke,” the press release states. “Investigators found no evidence of an intruder.”

This is an active investigation.
