New play “Cult of Love” will premiere on Broadway in autumn

The show is part of the fall season of the nonprofit institution Second Stage Theater, which also announced its fall Off-Broadway show. lunar eclipse.

The Second Stage Theater presents the New York premiere of Cult of Love on Broadway, a new play by Emmy nominee Leslye Headland. Performances begin November 20th, with the premiere December 12th at the Hayes Theater.

Cult of Love is set at a Dahl family gathering at Christmas time. Parents Bill and Ginny are devout Christians and have raised their four children as such, but now they are all grown up and have their own families, lifestyles and beliefs. As the Dahls and their in-laws sing Christmas carols and reminisce about old family rituals, the tensions and repressions they have held onto for years suddenly erupt.

The cast has yet to be announced.

Cult of Love premiered in Los Angeles in 2018 with the IAMA Theatre Company and was performed to great acclaim at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre earlier this year. Trip Cullman directed this production and will do so on Broadway.

Headland is best known as co-author of the Netflix series Russian doll with Natasha Lyonne and Amy Poehler. She also wrote the play Bachelorette and later directed and wrote the film adaptation. She currently serves as a writer, showrunner and executive producer The AcolyteA war of stars Series on Disney+.

Also in the fall season of the Second Stage Theater, which is performed at the Tony Kiser Theater off Broadway, is the new play lunar eclipsestarring Tony Award winner Reed Birney and Drama Desk Award nominee Lisa Emery as a long-married couple who, while chatting and drinking in anticipation of a lunar eclipse, discover they don’t know each other as well as they thought.

The show is written by Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Margulies and directed by Kate Whoriskey. Performances begin October 9, with the premiere on October 30.
