For those who haven’t read the books the TV series is based on, Francesca marries John and they are very happy until his death.

After his death, Francesca and his cousin Michael fall in love a few years later.

In the Netflix series, Michael has undergone a sex change and is now Michaela.

And while many fans were happy about the series’ more inclusive direction, some claimed the show had a “social agenda.”

Julia Quinn has now published a statement on social media defending the decision to change Michael’s gender for the TV adaptation.

She said: “It is very important to me that the world of Bridgerton becomes more diverse and inclusive as the stories move from the book to the screen.

“But changing the gender of a main character is a huge change. When Jess Brownell first approached me with the idea of turning Michael into Michaela for the show, I needed more information before I gave my approval.”

Although she was initially skeptical about the decision, she added: “I am now confident that Francesca’s season of Bridgerton will be the most emotional and heartbreaking story in the series.”

“Honestly, it might have even more impact, as John gets a lot more screen time than he ever did in the book, and I think it’s fair to say we’ve all fallen a little bit in love with him.”

She thanked fans for their support, but asked them to trust the story decisions she and the production team made.

She added: “I ask that you please give me and the Shondaland team some trust as we move forward.

“I think in the end we will have two stories, one on paper and one on screen, and both will be beautiful and moving.”
