The Chesterton Lions Club celebrated its 90th anniversary on Saturday, June 8, at the Spa Special Events Center in Porter. The club was founded in October 1933 by a group of 20 Chesterton businessmen, sponsored by the Michigan City Lions Club. Members and guests enjoyed a buffet featuring ribeye steak, chicken parmesan, appetizers and sides.

Lion Robin Smith, past president of the club and past district governor of the district, acted as moderator along with Mike Perkins, president of the club.

Lions from many other clubs attended that evening. After dinner, Douglas Lozier, former international director of Lions International of Carmel, gave a presentation. He reviewed world and local events that occurred in the year of the club’s founding in 1933. Secretary Don Habel gave a brief history of the club, highlighting many of the projects undertaken over the years and the beneficiaries of our donations. Several awards were presented, including a Melvin Jones Fellowship for President Perkins.

The award was named for the founder of the Lions Clubs. The Lion of the Year award was presented to Douglas Leicht. A WP Woods Fellowship was presented to Mary Beringer, a club member from Deming, New Mexico, who has supported the Chesterton Lions from afar.

Finally, PID Lozier presented Smith and Habel with certificates of recognition as International Presidents for their commitment to Lionism.

The Chesterton Lions meet on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at the VFW Post 2511 Hall on Wagner Road in Porter. Dinner is provided at the fourth Tuesday meeting. Guests are always welcome.

The club’s next events are a Fourth of July pancake and sausage breakfast at Hawthorne Park in Porter, followed by the annual children’s turtle derby.
