About Truecaller’s AI voice scanner, how it works and its limitations

In May, caller ID service Truecaller launched an AI voice scanner that can “alert users in real-time during the call – if it detects that the voice you are hearing is AI-generated.” The scanner is an AI model trained to distinguish between human voices and AI-synthesized voices to help users identify when they are receiving AI-generated scam/spam calls. There was a lack of transparency about how exactly the scanner was trained and what it looks for as identifiers of AI-generated voices when scanning calls.

Speaking to MediaNama journalist Kamya Pandey, Raphael Mimoun and Roy Festinger from the Truecaller team share that the model currently works only with English language audios and that the company is working on making it compatible with Hindi as well.

In this interview, they discuss in detail the features of the model, its limitations, and the general challenges in detecting audio deepfakes.
