Sources – Timberwolves and Chris Finch agree to 4-year extension

After the best season in franchise history, Minnesota Timberwolves coach Chris Finch has agreed to a four-year contract extension through the 2027/28 season, sources told ESPN on Monday.

Finch has led the Timberwolves to three consecutive playoff appearances for the first time in 20 years and accelerated the development of 2020 first-round pick Anthony Edwards into one of the league’s top talents.

En route to the Western Conference finals – where Minnesota lost to Dallas in five games – Finch suffered a torn right patellar tendon after point guard Mike Conley collided with Finch on the sideline during a Game 4 loss to Phoenix in the first round. Finch required surgery and had to rely on his top assistant, Micah Nori, on the sidelines for the remainder of the playoffs.

Despite some skepticism, Finch was able to utilize the frontcourt duo of Rudy Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns and build a league-leading defensive effort. The Timberwolves were also second in basket defense and second in points allowed per game this season, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Finch has a 160-127 (.557) record in parts of his four seasons in charge, including a 56-26 record en route to the Western Finals this season. Minnesota overcame a 15-point halftime deficit – the largest in Game 7 history – to defeat Denver in the Western Conference semifinals.
