Duluth City Council Actions at Monday’s Meeting

Local news, sports, weather presented by the WDIO News Team

At the Duluth City Council meeting Monday night, council members passed the agenda by a one-vote majority. Key items on the agenda included $1.2 million for sewer lining across the city and nearly $700,000 for engineering services for lead pipe replacement projects in the Fairmont and Lincoln Park neighborhoods.

In another action, Council Vice President Terese Tomanek shared positive financial news with the council regarding the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center, telling her fellow council members, “I’m happy to report that the DECC has not had to use any of the $1 million we approved last fall. And there is no need to use that $1 million line of credit in the future. The DECC administration has worked very hard to keep costs down and to find and attract new business. And so far, revenues are up 8% or $400,000 in 2024. So they are over budget and expected to finish the year in the black. They are cautiously optimistic.”

Another topic that Duluth residents will likely hear a lot about in the coming months is local sports. The council passed a resolution awarding RDG Planning & Design more than $380,000 to design a
Plan for sports facilities.

RDG will develop a plan that includes indoor soccer, lacrosse, baseball and softball, incorporating public-private and intergovernmental partnerships.
