What’s underneath? Michigan couple makes discovery in house

MARYSVILLE, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) — A Michigan home went viral on TikTok after the homeowners documented what they discovered under their indoor hot tub.

“To be honest, I’d like to jump in right now,” said Trevor Gilmartin, recalling the moment he and his wife, Hayley, discovered a hole under their hot tub. “We did a few tests to make sure the water would fit.”

Ironically, scuba diving is a hobby for both him and his wife, so he had the necessary equipment to dive in. The couple documented their discovery on TikTok, where the video has been viewed nearly 30 million times.

However, many wondered what this almost six-meter-deep hole was.

“When I got in, I thought: every inch is OK, I can do this, you know. Nothing has bitten me yet,” Gilmartin said.

Gilmartin said the conversion into a residential building took place in 1979. He only knew about the water pumping station from a newspaper clipping given to him by the previous owner of the house.

What he didn’t know was what was under the hot tub on the other side of his living room.

He and his wife tell CBS News Detroit it’s still fun to think about what other historic landmarks the house could have been, even before the water pumping station.

“I don’t want to cover it up. I know we have a lot of space here that we’re not using. I know we have a lot of space here that we’re not using from the house. So if we have to cover it up, I’d like to build something that will allow access to it. If I want to, even if that’s for the next 10 years, you know,” Gilmartin said as he discussed possible next steps.
