Ithaca High School postpones graduation ceremony due to weather

ITHACA, NY — Ithaca High School (IHS) seniors will have to wait an extra day to graduate due to weather conditions, according to a release from the Ithaca City School District (ICSD). The soon-to-be graduates were originally scheduled to receive their diplomas Monday during a series of outdoor ceremonies at the school’s Moresco Stadium.

The National Weather Service is forecasting scattered showers and windy weather throughout the day Monday, with about a 40% chance of rain and winds around 25 mph.

While conditions may not be ideal for the IHS graduation ceremony, other Ithaca residents may find today’s weather a welcome change after a nearly week-long heat wave.

Better weather conditions are forecast for Tuesday, but also slightly warmer and more humid. District officials said the ceremony could be moved indoors to the high school’s Kulp Auditorium if Tuesday’s weather forecast changes unexpectedly.

If the ceremony is moved indoors, students are only allowed to bring four guests each. If the ceremony takes place outdoors as planned, there is no guest limit.

The ceremony will also be streamed live on the district’s YouTube channel.

Lehman Alternative Community School (LACS) graduation ceremonies are not affected by the change. LACS graduation ceremonies are scheduled for Tuesday in the school’s outdoor amphitheater.

Update 12:22 p.m.: An earlier version of this story used a lower-resolution image of a 2015 IHS graduation ceremony that was misstated.
