COROLLA, NC (WNCN) — A lightning strike sparked a fire Monday morning that severely damaged a beach house on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, officials said.

The fire was reported around 6:45 a.m. in a three-story home in the 900 block of Corolla Drive in the Whalehead neighborhood of Currituck County.

When Corolla fire and rescue crews arrived at the vacation home, flames were visible coming from the roof.

According to Sam Walker of OBXNews, there were ten tenants in the building at the time of the fire.

Nine people were able to quickly leave the house, but one man was briefly trapped inside but was soon able to escape, Walker reported.

It took several fire departments more than 20 minutes to bring the fire under control.

The fire was not extinguished until an hour later, Walker reported.

According to the Corolla Fire and Rescue Unit, the people vacationing at the home were relocated to another home.

In addition to the Corolla Fire Department, the Duck, Kitty Hawk and Southern Shores Volunteer Fire Departments assisted, officials said.

Nobody was injured.
