CPD Detective Chief Antoinette Ursitti said 73-year-old retired Chicago police officer Larry Neuman was outside his West Garfield Park home Thursday afternoon to pay a worker who was mowing his lawn when he saw two armed individuals approaching.

When Neuman saw that the two suspects were armed, he heroically pushed the worker out of the way, Ursitti said. Then Neuman pulled his own gun from his waistband, and that’s when the two suspects fired, hitting him.

Neuman was able to shoot the suspects, who then fled on foot, Ursitti said.

It all happened around 1:27 p.m. in the 4300 block of West Monroe Street.

Ursitti said after police released surveillance video of the suspects on Saturday, investigators were able to identify the 16-year-old now charged through anonymous tips and a police officer who recognized him from a previous encounter in May in which the teen was wearing the same clothing.

CPD has released video of two suspects wanted in connection with the shooting of retired police officer Larry Neuman in Chicago’s West Garfield Park.

Ursitti said the 16-year-old turned himself in to the Area Four police station on the corner of Harrison and Kedzie on Sunday evening. He will be charged as if he were an adult.

Investigators are still searching for the second person suspected of being involved in the shooting. A total reward of $75,000 has been offered for information related to Neuman’s death.

Rewards are offered by the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, ATF Chicago and FBI Chicago.
