Agent Recon star Marc Singer on how the film achieved “synergy”

Bleeding Cool: What fascinated you about Agent Recon?
What always interests me is twofold. First, is it going to be a good movie? Does it look, read, feel like a movie you can imagine when you read the script? If it is, and the images it puts on paper are interesting and compelling enough, then you say, “I’m interested.” The next step is to look at the characters and their interactions. If my character has enough weight and complexity, I can delve into the revelation of who this person is and what makes them tick in a deeper sense, and that’s what convinces me.

How would you describe the type of set Derek ran?
It’s funny in filmmaking. It’s like the old metaphor of peeling the onion. There’s always another layer, and everything is connected to everything else. The making of the film and the filmmakers are the same thing. The experience you have with one is a reflection of the experience you have with the other. The third aspect is that it’s usually transferable to the audience, like a hall of mirrors. Everyone reflects everyone else’s experience and every aspect of what went into it. When we were working on Agent Recon, all the action and adventure, we had Chuck Norris and me, but first and foremost Derek Ting, the writer, director, producer and star. That’s a big burden, a heavy task for any human being, and he deserves the title of lead actor because he led us in a great way. Everyone did their best and on the one hand were as deeply involved as you can be with their intentions. On the other hand, everyone had a great time. We laughed a lot even though we were working at the limit.

What was the atmosphere like on set with your younger co-stars and Chuck?
It’s an interesting synergy between experienced actors like myself who have been in the industry for so many decades, because I can’t help but represent a lot of experience in the eyes of younger professionals. There are tricks and insights into the process that we are all involved in together. Sometimes there is a willingness to use me as a text that they can glean and figure out things from for their professional lives and careers and acting techniques. At the same time, I feel the same in reverse because I see their youth, freshness and vitality as they approach the script, their careers and the longevity that lies ahead of them. A lot of that inspires and informs me, because today’s actors are, by and large, more sophisticated than they used to be. There are also a lot more opportunities for them to show off and learn, to practice their skills. Synergy is interesting in the way we give and take between us.

Did your younger colleagues seek you and Chuck out to learn the craft?
Absolutely. It’s a responsibility and it depends on the people you’re working with and how they respond. There have been many moments where I’ve felt it wouldn’t be inappropriate if I demonstrated some film techniques that can be used on camera to help convey the meaning of the scene or the meaning that an actor was trying to embody by injecting an emotional or intellectual idea, sign or intention into the moment of play. At the same time, you have to be careful not to go overboard because the creative process is such, especially in the performing arts, that it’s all about expression and capturing lightning in a bottle. You have to be careful not to disrupt their process. As warm as a person has to be, persevering as a performing artist is basically a delicate process and personal to each individual.
