Southern Deli closes its doors

From employee reports

Southern Deli opened its doors in June 2019 and quickly gained a reputation as one of Apopka’s most popular restaurants. Now, in June 2024, it will sadly close its doors for the final time at the end of this month.

“We thought opening a restaurant would be the hardest thing we would ever do,” the statement on the restaurant’s Facebook page reads. “We were wrong. WE ARE CLOSING. Our lease expires at the end of the month and given the current state of the market, we have not been able to find a suitable location. With the rising cost of food and rents, it makes no sense for us to continue. So many of you became our friends and then our family. We will miss seeing you every week. Thank you for all the love, support and memories. We will be here until Saturday.”

The great enthusiasm shown by Southern Deli’s regular customers on social media demonstrated how popular the deli is in the community.

“I’m so sorry to hear this,” said Teri Pangle. “Thank you for the 5 great years you gave us. The best home cooked food I’ve ever had. Kudos to The Southern Deli. We will definitely miss you.”

Pangles’ thoughts echoed dozens of other comments. As of 5 p.m. Monday, the post had received 468 likes, 219 comments and 74 shares.

On its website, Southern Deli explained the reason for the opening.

“Our vision was to create a menu that would remind you of your childhood – it features our favorite dishes and they are prepared exactly the way we ate them as kids. Southern Deli is not a traditional deli. We serve delicious Southern dishes including sammiches made from homemade biscuits, cornbread and freshly baked bread. When you bite into one of our sammiches, we want it to stick to your taste buds.”

Farewell, Southern Deli. We will miss you dearly…especially at lunchtime.
