Wireless collar microphones: Wireless collar microphones give teachers their voice back | Bengaluru News

Bengaluru: Teachers have a new friend in the classroom – wireless collar microphones. Clothing-clipped microphones have become handy accessories that ensure teachers are heard right up to the last bench in the classroom. As wireless microphones become smaller, more portable and easier to carry, teachers are finding them a useful tool in the classroom. “There is no such thing as a ‘teacher’s voice’ anymore. People prefer to speak in a normal voice, which is good to ensure that the volume in the classroom remains low. Teachers speak at a normal, comfortable volume but can be heard in a large room,” said Shanthi Menon, principal of Deens Academy. While microphones were once a boon for those who had vocal cord problems after years of teaching, they are now used more widely. Some schools like St. Joseph’s have purchased them in large numbers and all teachers are free to use them. “…the new formats have made them more user-friendly. At least 50% of our teachers use microphones as we get disturbed by traffic on Museum Road,” said Father Sunil Fernandes of St. Joseph’s High School. Microphones are becoming increasingly popular among primary school teachers. “We had a teacher who quit because she lost her voice. She took a year off and is back this year with a microphone. The device really helps teachers make their work less stressful as they don’t have to shout for everyone to hear,” said Seema Gupta, director of Navkis Educational Centre.“A positive trend”“Paying attention to teachers’ well-being, especially their voice health, is a very positive trend,” said Maya Menon, Founder and Director, Teacher Foundation. “A teacher’s voice is an important tool that brings life to the classroom teaching process. While pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree, we do not learn how to modulate our voice and control our breathing to make our voice heard in a class of 45 or 50 students. We overuse our vocal cords, develop vocal cord nodules and lose the smoothness and timbre of our voice. Many teachers who may have loved singing lose their singing voices due to years of teaching and speaking loudly in class. Apart from that, our voices sound tired when we teach multiple classes every day during a long teaching career. Hence, sound amplification is a good thing. But teachers still need to learn with simple vocal exercises like singers do to use their voice effectively,” she said.
