Will Smith returns to the awards stage – as an actor

(NEXSTAR) – Will Smith plans to take the stage to perform a song at Sunday’s BET Awards, according to a press release for the ceremony.

The 55-year-old actor recently teamed up with Sean Paul to record the song “Light Em Up” for his latest “Bad Boys” film (“Bad Boys: Ride or Die”), but BET has hinted that Smith will perform an entirely “new original song” at Sunday’s ceremony.

“From his early days as a rapper to ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ to his box office success as one of the Bad Boys, Will Smith is a true global icon and we are honored to welcome him back to the BET Awards stage,” said Connie Orlando, Executive Vice President of Specials, Music Programming & Music Strategy at BET, in the press release. “We look forward to Will contributing to another defining night for culture that will not be missed.”

Smith began his music career, releasing five albums as part of the hip hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, followed by four albums as a solo artist—the last of which, Lost and Found, came out in 2005. He continued to release non-album singles, appear as a guest artist (sometimes remixing songs), and contribute music to films.

In April, Smith also performed his 1997 hit “Men In Black,” which was written for the film of the same name, in a surprise appearance during J. Balvin’s performance at Coachella.

BET has not released any further details about Smith’s upcoming appearance.

This Sunday’s performance also marks one of Smith’s few appearances at a major awards ceremony since the 94th Academy Awards, where he took the stage to slap Chris Rock after the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, Smith’s wife.

Smith won the Best Actor award later that evening, but was banned from attending any Academy events for ten years.

In addition to Smith, performances by Ice Spice, Sexyy Red, Shaboozey, Tyla and Lauryn Hill with YG Marley are also scheduled for Sunday’s BET Awards. Oscar-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson will host the event.

The BET Awards will air on Sunday, June 30th at 8 p.m.
