Death of firefighter’s son during exercise in Miami-Dade under investigation

VIRGINIA GARDENS – Fire trucks and ambulances stand in front of the building where a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue exercise ended with the death of a firefighter’s son.

According to police, Miami-Dade firefighters were conducting a drill with international firefighters when a fire broke out on NW 36th Street shortly before 11 a.m. Friday.

When the rescue team arrived, they found 28-year-old Fabian CameroSon of firefighter Francisco Camero, in critical condition due to smoke inhalation. Camero was taken to Ryder Trauma Center where he later died.

According to a GoFundMe page set up on behalf of the family, “Fabian was a brave and dedicated young man who was passionate about following in his father’s footsteps to serve and protect our community.”

Fabian was a registered paramedic but not a member of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said: “The case is currently under investigation. I have nothing further to report to you, but I can tell you that we are deeply concerned. We are investigating, the state is investigating, the police are investigating and our internal affairs department is investigating.”

American Medical Response, where Camero worked, gave us the following statement:

“American Medical Response (AMR) is deeply saddened by the recent passing of one of our employees, Fabian Camero. His death was unrelated to his employment at AMR Miami Dade. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues during this time.“

Miami-Dade police are investigating the death.
