Greenville men guilty of attempted robbery of Spartanburg teen

Three Greenville men were found guilty in 2019 of shooting death of a Spartanburg teenager.

On December 19, 2019, Greenville County officials found 15-year-old Kerolos Mina Zaky dead in a car with at least one gunshot wound on Mansion Circle in Piedmont.

Braelon Jaspar Brown, 23, was found guilty of murder, attempted armed robbery and conspiracy in Zaky’s death. Jaylin Hill and David Christopher Bernard Mosley, both 20, were found guilty of attempted armed robbery and conspiracy. Judge Perry Gravely of the 13th Judicial District in Greenville presided over the five-day trial, which ended Friday.

Jamazzeo Dequan Glover, 23, faces the same charges, but his trial is pending as prosecutors review his case, according to the 13th Office of the District Attorney.

All were 18 years old or younger at the time of the shooting. Glover and Brown were 18 and Hill and Mosley were 15.

Brown, who was accused of shooting Zaky, was sentenced to 50 years in prison for murder, five years for attempted armed robbery and 20 years for conspiracy. Mosley and Hill were sentenced to 18 years for attempted armed robbery and five years for conspiracy.

The sentences will be served concurrently. All three men were originally charged with murder, but Brown was the only one found guilty of that charge.

“We are thrilled with Brown’s verdict. We believe he is a violent person who would have committed this type of crime again,” said 13th District Attorney Doug Richardson after the trial. “The verdict was very appropriate. The other two received a very severe sentence for attempted armed robbery. Although they were not convicted of murder, they were certainly partly responsible for the child’s death.”

Kraig Pringle, lawyer for David Mosley, said the case was “difficult”.

“(It was) a terrible case where a promising young man was killed. There is no turning back from this,” Pringle said. “As for David Mosley, he has a lot to offer. He has his whole life ahead of him. We are certainly grateful that the jury saw through the fog and found him not guilty of murder.”

The GCSO arrested Glover on December 20, 2019. A week after the shooting, Brown was arrested. The latest round of arrests involved Hill, Mosley and Tyreke McMahand. McMahand, who was 14 at the time, took a plea deal in family court as a juvenile and was released, but was later arrested on other, non-violent charges.

“I think they (the jury) were paying attention. Throughout the trial they were focused on what we had to say and I think that was pretty clear in their verdict. Although we would have preferred if they had found all three guilty of murder because we believe the law allows that, we were very pleased with the verdict we got,” 13th Said District Attorney Brittini McCall.

“The shooter was convicted of murder and will essentially spend the rest of his life behind bars,” McCall said.

During the trial, McCall presented the victim’s statement written by Zaky’s father, Mina Ibrahim, on behalf of his family.

“He had such a bright future ahead of him and it was taken from him in a very brutal way. This tragic event has devastated my family. We will never be the same, we will never get over the loss of our son and my children’s brother, we are still grieving. I want these defendants to know that they have destroyed a family unit,” Ibrahim wrote.

After the trial, prosecutor Andrew Culbreath said the trial sends a message to Greenville about juvenile delinquency and its consequences.

“I think the message is that when teens and young people choose to commit violent crimes like adults, they will be prosecuted like adults. We will use every tool at our disposal to keep this community safe and to bring justice to the victims.”
