The key area where the Packers coaches want to improve with Jordan Love

Jordan Love emerged in 2023 and proved he is the Green Bay Packers quarterback of the present and future. But despite his eye-opening performance, the Packers know Love is not a finished product yet.

In year three, Green Bay wants Love to improve his foot game, head coach Matt LaFleur told ESPN’s Rob Demovsky. Still early in the offseason, LaFleur’s main focus is making sure his quarterback has mastered technique.

“We put a lot of emphasis on making sure the feet are perfect,” LaFleur said. “We make sure the guys are progressing and have perfect feet. And if they’re not, they hear it. I just think again, in the offseason, where we are, in the new defense, it’s important that they understand what drops we expect from them, so we implemented it.”

Quarterback coach Tom Clements echoed LaFleur’s comments. Clements knows Love’s success will come from mastering the fundamentals.

“It’s just more fundamental things,” Clements said. “Footwork and how he moves in the pocket, and we’re working on the drills, throwing a lot of routes in the air because you can’t have defenders out there at this point. It’s just about presence in the pocket, when to move, when not to move, things like that.”

Intangibles aside, Jordan Love proved to be a flawless leader in his debut as QB1, leading Green Bay to a 9-8 record and a trip to the Divisional Round in the playoffs. Love helped orchestrate a 48-32 victory over the NL East champion Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card Round. While the Packers lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the next matchup, Love had given fans more than just reason to believe.

Now, Green Bay is making sure Love continues to grow in his new role. Just because he’s firmly established as QB1 doesn’t mean there isn’t room for growth. After his 2023 season, many eyes will be on Love. The Packers coaching staff is here to make sure he shines.

The Packers faced a lot of criticism when they selected Love with the No. 26 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Aaron Rodgers was still on the roster and fans felt Green Bay should have focused more on building talent around him. Hindsight is always 20/20, but at least for now, the team’s long-term risk appears to have paid off.

Love started all 17 games and completed 64.2 percent of his passes for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He was the league’s second-leading passing touchdown player and seventh in yards. Love seemed to get better and better as the year went on.

After throwing 10 interceptions in his first nine games, the quarterback has only had one interception in his last eight games. In Weeks 12 and 13, he had back-to-back 260-yard, 3/0 TD/INT games against the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs. And in this playoff matchup against the Cowboys, Love threw for 272 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions.

The Packers believe they have the right man in Jordan Love. Green Bay now wants to sign him as QB1 and just smooth out the corners.
