“Love Lock” fence along New Orleans riverfront damaged

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — If you’ve walked along the Mississippi River in recent years, you’ve noticed a fence decorated with several locks. It’s become known as the “Love Lock” fence or “Locks of Love” fence. In recent weeks, visitors passing by the fence have noticed that the fence is now covered in paint and vandalized.

A thick layer of black paint now covers the fence where a variety of different locks of all shapes and colors once hung. Couples would come to the fence and hang a lock on it to symbolically express their affection, connection and love for someone.

Because the fence is now covered in paint, these couples can no longer distinguish their “love lock” from the others.

Over the years, the Love Lock fence has become a popular spot for visitors to take photos along the riverbank.

Many fence visitors expressed their disbelief and sadness that the fence was covered in paint.

Experts say the paint splatters on the fence cannot be removed with simple paint remover. It looks like they will need to be removed with a pressure washer.

The “Love Lock” fence here in New Orleans resembles the world famous “Love Lock” bridge in Paris, France, which crosses the famous Seine River.
