LCBO extends opening hours ahead of possible strike

LCBO extends opening hours ahead of possible strike

The LCBO announces that it will extend its store opening hours starting this week in response to a possible strike by union employees.

On Thursday, the Crown corporation said all of its stores will open as early as 9:30 a.m. and many will stay open until 10 p.m. to ensure customers have plenty of time to shop. Hours will vary by location, the LCBO said in a news release.

“While LCBO’s focus remains on reaching a deal that is fair for bargaining unit employees and helps LCBO continue to serve Ontario effectively and efficiently in a new market, we are confident in our plan that will enable LCBO to continue to serve our customers at this time,” the release said.

Last week, the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), which represents about 10,000 LCBO workers, called for a no-board report, triggering a 17-day countdown to a possible strike at 12:01 a.m. on July 5.

A union spokesman said the day was chosen so as not to affect the long weekend.

“We encourage our customers to shop early and stock up on the products they want. Our shelves are well stocked and we are doing everything we can to maintain inventory levels,” the LCBO statement said.

“Customers may be particularly interested in stocking up on spirits and vintage products at this time.”

The LCBO further stated that delivery to stores will be possible until June 26 “to ensure a timely delivery window for customers.”

Same day pickup is available until July 2nd.

“Customers can purchase alcoholic beverages through participating LCBO on-demand delivery providers through July 4,” the press release states.
