2 injured when driver crashes into power pole in Michigan and car catches fire

GARFIELD TOWNSHIP, Michigan. – Two people were injured when a Michigan driver crashed into a power pole, causing the car they were in to catch fire.

The accident occurred on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at approximately 12:15 a.m. on Cass Road, north of Dendrinos Drive, in Garfield Township.

When Michigan State Police officers were called to the scene, they found a car lying on its side with the engine compartment on fire.

Officials said a power pole broke in two and wires hung about two meters above the roadway.

Deputies and police extinguished the fire, but were unable to reach the car’s occupants because of the power lines.

The driver, a 28-year-old woman from Northport, was responsive, but the 35-year-old passenger from Traverse City was not, police said.

Officers gave the driver first aid instructions until both people could be rescued by the Traverse City Fire Department.

The Traverse City man was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver’s injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The police believe that alcohol played a role in the accident.

The investigation is ongoing.
