Number of tourists killed in Greek heatwave rises to six, more missing

A 67-year-old German man was found dead on the Greek island of Crete, police said on Monday. This is the sixth death of a tourist in June during a period of unusually hot weather.
The tourist had set out alone on Sunday to hike in a gorge in the Sougia region and after a few hours had called his wife to tell her that he was not feeling well.
“A search and rescue operation was launched immediately and a special rescue unit using drones discovered the man’s body in the Trypiti Gorge,” a police official told Reuters.
The police could not determine the identity of the dead German.
During an unusual heatwave in June, numerous deaths and missing tourists occurred in the Mediterranean country, highlighting the dangers of exposure to temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius or more.
Rescue teams are also searching for two French women aged 73 and 64 on the island of Sikinos and a 59-year-old American police officer who is on holiday on the island of Amorgos.
A 55-year-old American was found dead on the Greek island of Mathraki in the Ionian Sea last week, and a Dutch tourist was found dead on the Aegean island of Samos earlier this month.
The body of British television presenter Michael Mosley was found on June 9 on Symi, another Aegean island, after a four-day search using planes, drones and boats. He had been out walking alone in high temperatures before he disappeared.
