Studiocanal sells “The Vow” to Poland, two Baltic states and France

Studiocanal, one of Europe’s leading production, distribution and international sales companies, continues to penetrate the markets of Central and Eastern Europe and beyond, recording further sales of the premium daily series “The Vow” (“La Promesa”). In addition to France, the company has won Poland and two Baltic states.

“The Vow” was produced by Spanish company Bambú Producciones (“Velvet,” “The Telephone Operators”), a Studiocanal company, Studiocanal and Spanish public broadcaster RTVE, and acquired by Polish pub-casting broadcaster TVP Poland, state-owned network ERR Estonia and state-owned LTV Latvia.

As part of further new sales, Dubai TV has secured the rights for the MENA regions. The French free-to-air broadcaster C8, which, like Studiocanal, belongs to the Canal+ group, will broadcast the series from July.

Mediaset Italy has now acquired all three seasons of “The Vow”, as have Dori Media Israel and the Finnish state broadcaster YLE.

HRT Croatia and LTV Lithuania as well as the commercial network KTV Kosovo, which have already broadcast the first season, have signed contracts for further seasons.

“The Oath” was created by Josep Cister Rubio (“Acacias 38”, “Dos Vidas”) and written by Cister Rubio, Susana Prieto, Ruth García and Carmen Llano. The film begins in 1913, when Jana, a maid in the dilapidated but still ruthless Luján house, seeks revenge for her mother’s murder. What Jana does not expect, however, is that she will fall in love with Manuel, the son of the Count of Lujan, who swears his love for her but cannot commit himself to her publicly due to class differences.

The offers will be announced on the first day of NATPE Budapest and immediately after the conclusion of the Spanish Conecta Fiction.

They also come after The Vow achieved excellent ratings around the world. In Spain, where the series launched on RTVE’s La1 on January 12, 2023, its 14.2% market share on June 5 of this month was the second-best in the series’ history and 5.1 percentage points above the La1 channel’s average in May.

In Latin America, where RTVE sold “The Vow” to HBO Max, the series was ranked fourth among all Max series worldwide as of June 23, thanks to rankings of No. 1 or No. 2 in almost all territories.

Under the direction of Ramón Campos, Bambú Producciones has initiated several groundbreaking revolutions in Spanish television: introducing a US pace to free-to-air Spanish prime-time programming (“Desaparecida,” 2007); selling an original Spanish program directly to Latin America without the need for dubbing into neutral Spanish (“Gran Hotel,” 2011–13); creating free-to-air series that capture the constant twists and surprises of melodrama in high-quality cable programming (“Velvet,” 2014–16).

With The Vow, Bambú, supported by generous funding from RTVE and Studiocanal, has produced a first-class daily drama that was not only often shot on location, but recently also included scenes set in the First World War.

Production is underway on the third season of “The Vow,” starring Ana Garcés, Arturo Sancho (“Heirs to the Land),” Eva Martín (“Amar es para siempre”), Manuel Regueiro (“Acacias 38”), María Castro (“Seis Hermanas”) and Antonio Velázquez (“Cable Girls,” “Tierra de lobos”).

“Central and Eastern Europe continues to be a dynamic market for daily series. ‘The Vow’ appeals to many and attracts a loyal audience across the region,” said Sarah Mottershead, VP Sales at Studiocanal.

“It’s a gripping, high-quality production that embraces romance, mystery and family relationships against a beautiful backdrop with lustrous period detail,” she added. “These qualities, combined with exceptional writing and acting talent, make it a real ratings hit with viewers. We’re delighted that a third season is in production, which will deliver even more compelling storylines for this gripping, long-running drama.”

“‘The Vow’ is showing very consistent and positive ratings dynamics and is becoming one of the most popular telenovelas broadcast on LTV in recent years,” enthused Zane Valeniece, Head of Acquisitions at LTV Latvia.

She continued: “LTV broadcasts high-quality telenovelas at 10:30 am Monday to Friday and this is also an important content on LTV’s digital platform. The show, which offers a rich storyline with great actors and locations, is an exciting and strong daily habit for the audience.”
