Joel Dommett of The Masked Singer exclusively reveals the romantic story behind Baby Wilde’s name

Survivors Presenter Joel Dommett and his wife Hannah Cooper welcomed their first child, son Wilde, last September and as we chat via video call, the 39-year-old TV star seems to have mastered fatherhood.

After perfectly timing Wilde’s nap, he proudly shows off the playpen the new parents built for their son, who is almost walking at eight and a half months.

“Hannah is out today, so I’m in charge of Dad,” reveals Joel, who teamed up with Pampers Baby-Dry nappies after new research showed that one in three parents in the UK lose sleep due to nighttime nappy leaks.

Here he talks about fatherhood and why he is in his element with baby Wilde…

Joel, how are things going with Wilde?

I didn’t even know that this love existed, how much love I have for this child. And yet it is so hard, especially at the beginning; you suffer so much from lack of sleep. In a strange way, I almost love the relentlessness, the routine, because my life is so chaotic.

One day I will present Lorrainethe next day The Masked Singerthe next moment I’m doing stand-up in a nightclub at 1 a.m. This gives my life a hell of a consistency.

Last week you celebrated your first Father’s Day…

I still can’t believe I’m a father. I never thought I’d be responsible enough to have a child and luckily I’m doing it with someone I really like and love. We help each other and that feels good.

Tell us about the name Wilde…

We got married in a hotel called The Wild in Mykonos, Greece. Funnily enough, I wanted to get a tattoo that said “Wild” and then when Hannah was pregnant, she said, “What do you think of the name Wilde?”

I thought, ‘Like, like a hotel?’ She said, ‘Yes.’ It also has Dutch connotations and Hannah speaks Dutch. Now we’re just grateful we didn’t get married in a Travelodge and have a baby called Trav.

Is he a good sleeper?

He’s ready now. We’re people with extremely busy schedules, we’re the worst. We’re the people you don’t like to spend time with. At a barbecue we say, “Sorry, we have to go – it’s 12:55.”

The only thing that really wakes him up at night is his explosive bowel movements. That blows my mind. But Pampers have a Stop & Protect pocket that stops the stool from running up the back.

When Hannah was pregnant, we bought all these cute clothes for Wilde, but we never wore any of them. He lives in pajamas with two zippers. When we leave the house, I put a cardigan over them. Who are these people who dress their children?

We love your podcast with Hannah called I have never. She is very funny…

She’s great, isn’t she? Wilde thinks she’s so funny and it really annoys me. I think to myself, “What are you doing that I’m not doing?”

I’m supposed to have 15 years of experience as a stand-up comedian and I do all kinds of faces and then she comes and goes “peek-a-boo!” and he freaks out. She’s so funny with babies.
