New book by William Harris and Peter Mackey presents insights from Ireland on revolutionising scientific innovation and economic prosperity

Harris and Mackey document how Irelandfaced with the decline of the Celtic Tiger, created SFI from scratch, invested in selected research areas and transformed themselves from a global innovation laggard into one of the most dynamic economies in the world. In SFI they show that small countries in Europe have a model for aligning government investment, university research and industry for economic success. The authors also make it clear that if the newly established Research Ireland forgets the lessons of the impact of SFI, it risks Ireland’s own global competitiveness.

To support their argument, the authors also refer to the powerful observations of such prominent voices as the former Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahernformer Deputy Prime Minister Mary Harney, India’s most successful entrepreneur Kiran Mazumdar Shawand some of Europe’s the most important scientists.

Harris and Mackey, Ahern writes, “have told a story of dramatic change, a big Irish bet and the power of cross-sector collaboration. Far more than that, they have virtually provided a blueprint for how other governments, companies, universities and leaders can capitalise on the lessons learned. Ireland I learned along the way.”

As Research Ireland prepares to acquire SFI in the coming months, the risks have increased that Ireland will neglect its own teachings. To grasp the significance of SFI’s history, How to change the future offers these lessons for leaders in Europe The aim is to combine scientific talent and investment with economic growth.
