STEUBENVILLE – The Women’s Club of Steubenville celebrated its June meeting with a baby shower at the AIM Women’s Center on North Fifth Street.

The club management has been preparing for the event for several months and has purchased a range of baby items for six expectant mothers at the centre.

In addition to a laundry basket full of baby clothes, each mother received two boxes of diapers, formula, a thermometer packet, a bath and bath kit, blankets, bottles, a diaper bag and books. Each expectant mother indicated what she needed most, and club members then purchased the desired item from that wish list. These items included bassinets, strollers and car seats with covers.

Some of the expectant mothers were present and had the opportunity to meet the women in the club and thank them for their generosity.

The club was also thanked by AIM CEO Rebekah Cohen Morris.

Morris spoke to members about the center and the services it offers to pregnant women across the region. Some have no one to turn to for help, she explained, adding that these things will really help women raise their babies.

Morris told the women that the center now offers abortion pill reversal and that in the near future they plan to purchase a property that will serve as a maternity home for eight to 10 women until they can get back on their feet after giving birth to their babies.

Morris told club members that the center does not receive any federal or state funding for its operations, but a small portion of the funding is awarded based on the number of purchases. “Choose life” License plates at the Department of Motor Vehicles and based on how many women’s centers there are in the area.

“The ‘Choose Life’ license plates have a measurable impact on us,” Morris said. She explained that in previous years the women’s center had cared for about 200 women. However, this year around 230 women have already been there.

“We have hired great people who show up and love these women,” Morris commented: She said the nurses are grateful for the women who come to the center for help, and some wish they could do this work full-time. “The mission is really important to them,” She added.

“A baby shower is a really nice addition and a great way to put a face to a name,” Morris told the participants. “It helps them build relationships with each other and gives the community a chance to make friends with the women here.”
