Sutherland named CSC Academic All-District

ANN ARBOR, Mich.Savannah Sutherland of the University of Michigan women’s track and field team was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team, the organization announced Tuesday (June 18).

Sutherland, a rising senior pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biology, health and society, has a 3.58 grade point average.

The Borden, Saskatchewan, native has had an impressive season, most recently setting the program and Canadian national record in the 400-meter hurdles twice at the NCAA Outdoor Championships earlier this month. Sutherland broke the standard of 54.45 seconds she set at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the semifinals (54.04) before surpassing it again in the finals with a time of 53.26 seconds, finishing second and earning first-team All-America honors. The time is the fastest in Big Ten history and fifth fastest all-time in the NCAA.

Sutherland won her second consecutive Big Ten title in the 400-meter hurdles, setting the meet record with a time of 55.01. She won her first Big Ten indoor title in the 400-meter dash (51.67). At the NCAA Indoor Championships, she placed seventh in the 400-meter dash and was named to the All-America first team.

To be named a CSC Academic All-American, student-athletes must be in their second year of college and have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50.
