The creator of “The Boys” reveals why the infamous comic twist was cut from the series

The Boys creator Eric Kripke has revealed why he decided to cut an infamous plot twist from the original comic.

Before “The Boys” became the hugely successful series that Prime Video fans know today, it began as a comic series by Garth Ennis.

As with many adaptations, Kripke tried to stay close to the source material on big things like Homelander and other Supes, but some characters, subplots, and pacing had to be changed to fit the television landscape.

One of those changes had to do with the comics’ most infamous twist, which was Black Noir. But Kripke candidly told Variety that he was “never interested in adapting” that story for television.

Warning: Below you will find spoilers for the comics and the fourth season of “The Boys”!

Black Noir from The Boys comics

In the comics, Black Noir is a clone of Homelander and serves as the main antagonist of the series. It turns out that he was the true mastermind behind the most horrific events in history.

This is one of the biggest twists in the comics, as it made readers believe that Homelander was the biggest threat to the Boys, just like in the series.

However, Kripke wanted to go in a different direction, telling the outlet, “That’s an insane twist. But it’s like, well, wait a minute, the villain I’ve been following isn’t really the villain. And the mileage varies, and I’m sure fans are mad that I’m not going in that direction, but that wasn’t as satisfying to me. I figured if I’m going to follow this villain, I want this guy to be the villain. So I was never really into the clone idea.”

The showrunner further explained that the idea of cloning would be “too silly and magical” for the series, adding, “We’re trying to say that superheroes are the only tricky thing and that we’re keeping everything else as down to earth as possible.”

Although the Black Noir that viewers see in season 4 is not a Homelander clone, he is also not the same character as in previous seasons. It is very obvious that a different person donned the mask after Homelander killed him in one of the most shocking moments of season 3.
